MRI for animals

MRI for animals

MRI, which stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is one of the most effective and advanced research methods used to diagnose a wide range of diseases in animals. All other radiological and computed tomography examinations are effective when relatively superficial visualization is sufficient to form a clear picture and make a diagnosis.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a method of medical imaging and examination of internal organs and tissues using the physical phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance. The examination is performed on the new Magneton Sempra 1.5T veterinary apparatus.

What is the advantage of this method?
Magnetic resonance imaging is a non-invasive examination method without the use of ionizing radiation. MRI allows to clearly visualize the structures of the central nervous system, ligamentous apparatus of joints, to establish the exact localization and nature of pathology. This is an accurate and modern research method.

MRI in Zoolux clinic allows to detect and diagnose

  • structural changes in the brain of various etiologies with a high level of pathology differentiation.
  • pathologies of the spinal cord, intervertebral discs and nerve roots.
  • Contrast angiography to detect vascular pathologies of the brain.
  • allows for detailed diagnosis of diseases of the ligamentous apparatus of the joints, including meniscus diseases
  • abdominal pathologies, the ability to assess blood flow and the dynamics of contrast agent accumulation.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with contrast for cats and dogs.

Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a highly informative diagnostic procedure. It involves performing MRI after injecting a special contrast agent into the body. Contrast enhancement helps to make MRI images clearer, visualize soft tissues, blood vessels, areas of inflammation and oncology.

How is the procedure performed?

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for animals is performed in Kyiv at 39 Dmytrivska Street (Entrance 2) by a veterinary radiologist by appointment only.
  • Appointments for MRI of cats and dogs are available from 8:00 to 18:00.
  • MRI for dogs and cats is performed under sedation, under the supervision of anesthesiologists.

How to prepare an animal for MRI?

  • Bring with you the results of recent examinations (if the examinations were not performed in Zoolux), in the absence of examinations, it is necessary to conduct them at the clinic.
  • Bring a referral from your doctor indicating differential diagnoses, the area of study, and the need for contrast medium.
  • Undergo an examination by an anesthesiologist immediately before anesthesia.

Contraindications

Contraindications to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are

  • presence of foreign metallic bodies or any implants not made of paramagnetic metal.
  • intolerance to sedatives;
  • severe uncompensated condition of patients in which anesthesia is contraindicated.

Answers to frequently asked questions from a radiologist:

How long does the examination and preparation before MRI last? - The examination takes 30 minutes, additional examinations up to 2 hours if necessary, the preparation itself takes 15 minutes.

How long does the MRI procedure itself take? - Magnetic resonance imaging takes 15-35 minutes depending on the area to be examined, depending on whether contrast is injected or not.

If contrast enhancement is required, how is the examination performed? - First, a native examination is always performed, then contrast is injected and 1-2 more sequences are performed to show the areas of contrast accumulation.

Do I need to bring a drug for MRI with contrast or is it available in the clinic? - The clinic has all the necessary drugs for MRI with contrast;

How long after the MRI does the animal fully recover? - depending on the general condition and concomitant problems, usually up to 60 minutes, during which time the animal is under observation in the hospital;

When is the MRI report issued? - The report is prepared within 24 to 48 hours. Disks with images are given to the owner when they pick up the animal after the diagnostic procedure.

Where can I see the results of the tests and if my doctor needs information, what should I do? - The results of the test can be viewed in your personal Zoolux account, and the results are sent by mail if it is indicated in the animal's questionnaire. If your doctor needs any information, the radiologist contacts the doctor individually. We work with the majority of veterinary clinics in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine, and we deliver the results of the examination with recommendations personally to the doctor who treats the animal.

Areas for MRI of animals: head, spine, abdominal organs, thoracic limbs, pelvic limbs, pelvis.
