How to prepare a cat for a haircut

Grooming cats in a clinic can be quite stressful.

Sometimes this stress is even greater than a routine visit to the vet. This is due to cats' dislike of combing and bathing. How can you make a visit to the clinic more relaxed?

We recommend that you prepare at home. First, don't forget the basic rules for transporting cats.

Secondly, you can safely and easily calm your pet down by drinking sedatives from a needleless syringe or mixing them with a small amount of soft food.

The procedure should be carried out 2 hours before the visit to the clinic. In a regular pharmacy or at the reception of any of our clinics, you can buy a capsule of Gabapentin 300 mg (Gabantine, Gabalept, Gabagamma). The capsule can be opened and the white powder can be poured out of it. Inject 1\2 of the contents in the above way.

This drug causes drowsiness and mild alteration of consciousness in cats, which helps to reduce the intensity of stress during grooming and bathing.The drug is absolutely safe and the recommended dosage does not affect the functioning of internal organs.

It is possible that some animals may require general sedation. In this case, the groomer, together with the anesthesiologist, will administer sedatives exclusively according to the weight of the pet during the entire period of bathing and drying.

Before the procedure, the cat will be examined by a doctor; if the cat is over 8 years old, basic blood tests and ultrasound diagnostics of the heart (ECHO) will most likely be performed.

A number of breeds (sphynxes, British and Scottish Shorthair cats, Maine Coons) are very prone to heart disease, so we recommend examining them once a year, regardless of age.
